Types Of Small Dogs Explained – Part Two
Part two of this article on small dog breeds looks at small dogs in the toy, herding, terrier, and non-sporting groups.
Terrier Dogs
Terrier dogs were bred to hunt – rats, rabbits, foxes, and even badgers, river rats, and otters. Rather than the hunters of old, most terriers today are bought as pets. And with their affectionate and loyal temperament, they do make great pets. However, they are dogs with strong personalities, and they need equally strong willed owners. This is even true of the small, toy terriers – they don’t see themselves as little dogs. Terriers also have a lot of energy, so you’ll need to exercise them a fair bit. They have wiry coats, and to keep the characteristic wiriness of their coats you’ll need to do a special grooming technique called stripping grooming needs in order to maintain that characteristic wiriness}.
There are many small breeds in the terrier grouping. They are: the Border Terrier, Irish Terrier, Manchester Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Australian Terrier, Norwich Terrier and Norfolk Terrier, Kerry Blue Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Welsh Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Smooth Fox Terrier, Bedlington Terrier dog breed, Scottish Terrier and Sealyham Terrier.
Toy Dogs
Toy dogs are amongst the most well known of the small dog types, due to their popularity with both people and celebrities. There are actually toy dogs in some of the other dog categories as well. Many large dogs have in fact been bred down to toy dog size.
Toy dogs are generally very friendly, though they can be fierce and angry as well. But they are great lap dogs, and often a cherished member of the family. Toy dogs include: Toy Poodle, Japanese Chin Dog, Maltese, and the Pomeranian dog breed.
Non-Sporting Dogs
Non-sporting dogs is a general term for those breeds the American Kennel Club recognizes, that don’t fall into any of the other groups. They have different temperaments, colors, sizes, ancestry, and coats. Small breed dogs in the non-sporting group are: the bichon frise, Tibetan Terrier, Boston Terrier, Tibetan Spaniel, French Bulldog, Lhasa Apso, and the Schipperke.
Herding Dogs
Herding dogs are a relatively new classification in the AKC. The dogs in this group were part of the working group. In fact, in many breed registries globally, they still are a sub-catgory of the working group. The dogs registered by the American Kennel Club are generally kept as pets, although herding (and working) dogs are still used worldwide on farms, cattle stations, and ranches because of their unique abilities to herd livestock. They can be trained to respond to specific commands and whistles, and perform a variety of herding related tasks particularly well. When herding dogs are pets, the herding instinct still remains. They generally express it by gently herding their humans, especially if there are any children in the family.
In the herding group, the small dog breeds are the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Border Collie, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and the Shetland Sheepdog.
Miscellaneous Dogs
The miscellaneous category covers breeds not fully recognized by he AKC. There are no small dogs here.
