Have You Let Your Important Anniversaries Go To The Dogs
The invitation with the photo on the front proved it. This couple was not freakishly attractive. Adorable yes, but not drop dead gorgeous. Unless your a passionate lover of your household pets. Our friends are big on anniversaries of all kinds and this time it would include presents for pooches. Their dogs had been part of the family for two years.
Homemade banners touted popular phrases like ‘you ain’t nothing but a hound dog’ and ‘three dog night’. We wore name badges shaped like milk bones, nuts were in bowls with the dog’s names on the side, and some snacks looked like chew toys.
The old garage was converted to a sunken play room where the men went to shoot pool. I was not surprised to see that a large portion was dedicated to dog country. There was a humidifier, a portable space heater, foam dog bed, dog clothing, and lots of dog toys.
The women universally commented on the dogs having a better anniversary celebration than they experienced. That was the day I started planning for a wedding anniversary. I had nearly a month to make my wife feel as cherished as the neighbors ‘kids’.
Planning can be a bit heady. It turns out that there are tons of terrific anniversary celebration ideas. My search went from magazines my dentist provides in the waiting room to the internet. Should I fly her away to a tropical location? Drive to a nearby large city for a night on the town? I chose somewhere between lavish and local.
I found out that it was really affordable to have a photo stretched to a foot high and six feet long. The same company that printed my invitations off the online template I submitted provided that service. This would be my banner and it was made from a photo that was actually six pictures I combined on my personal computer.
I combined two ideas. First a romantic dinner with a card, a jewelry item, and a framed photo. The picture was taken in that very restaurant where we had our first dinner date all those years ago. Then it was off to the club for dancing but when we arrived all of our family and chosen family was present.
My wife was a bit overwhelmed. The screen was filed with images and songs that amounted to the soundtrack of our lives together. To end the night we held each other on the dance floor to the tune that was played for our first dance as husband and wife so many years ago. I braced myself for the loving thank you as she looked deep into my eyes and said, ‘Okay Mister. Who are you and what have you done with my husband’.
