My dogs are driving me insane, should I keep my dogs?
I have two dogs (toy fox terriers). I have loved them even though they have been impossible to house train and bark 24/7. I have a new house and a new baby now, and I have become neurotic about the dogs messing in the house and barking. I cry about it and if I find one of their messes my day is ruined. I just get so angry thinking about my newborn son crawling in urine soaked carpet. My husband and I have tried everything (and every book) to train them to no avail. I am at my whits end and I feel like a terrible person. I can’t live with them and keep my sanity, but I would feel terrible if I just gave them away… I just don’t want my good/bad day to depend on whether the dog had a mess in the house or not. Any suggestions? ( i can’t afford $700 to pay a behaviorist(called barkbusters and the Russian guy)… if you know someone in the metro detroit area that cares about dogs more than money let me know) Thank you for your time and I appreciate any suggestions.
This is a problem I see all too often. New parents become very neurotic and the pet is the one who gets hurt. It’s okay though, don’t feel like a terrible person. Try finding a home where they can stay together. Depending on their age, it is still very possible to house break them. However, if you can’t devote a lot of time to doing this, then it’s best to just find them a new home. Invest in some special potty pads until you can do this. You can find them at any Wal-Mart or Petco or Petsmart. They are scented pads, that draw the dog to potty there. If and when they potty on the pads praise them, give them treats and hugs. If they don’t potty on it, scold them gently while near the potty stain. Take them out often, especially after they potty on the pad and take the pad with you, show them it is best to potty outside. When you see them potty outside, praise them even more. Dogs live to please their masters. As for the barking, invest in a spray bottle and fill it with water. Whenever they start barking, give them a squirt. Be consistent.
