Unique Living Room Furniture for Frequent Entertainers

Americans love their televisions. According to a recent report, there are more TVs than people in the average U.S. home—2.93 TV sets per household compared to 2.54 people. But more important than the number of sets may be the size of these sets. The size of the average television in the U.S. has increased by a foot over the past decade. The average TV set is fast approaching 40 inches!

How did they get so big so fast?  Two new technologies have made it cheaper and easier to purchase large screen sets. It is easier because these new devices take up a lot less room than the traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) television set. These antiquated monsters took up several square feet of space and weighed several hundred pounds. But new flat screen technology has changed all that.

Plasma and Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) sets have taken over the market in the decade. These flat screen units can be mounted on a wall or can sit atop a media stand, much like flat screen computer monitors. Even the larger units only weight around fifty or sixty pounds and they don’t take up space, especially if they are mounted.

But that is not the only reason why Americans are buying bigger and bigger sets. You see, these sets work better when they’re bigger and the technology has improved to the point where larger sets don’t cost much more than slightly smaller ones. In fact, plasma technology can only support larger units. As a result, there are no sets smaller than 32 inches. The average plasma set sold in America is 46 inches!

We mention this not because we are in favor of larger televisions for Americans, but because it has had a profound effect on the arrangement of the average living room.

The living room has always been the most popular room in the home for entertaining. Guests are invited over for dinner parties, to watch movies or the big game. Whatever the reason, the living room is arranged with both the family and guests in mind. But what happens when people get bigger, more impressive television sets and have more room for guests? As you might expect, they tend to do more entertaining.

Furniture

Flat screen televisions change the furniture arrangement of the room. Because they are typically much larger than traditional sets and they take up less room, homeowners like to take advantage of the extra space. If you plan on doing more entertaining than you did in the past, it is important to provide additional seating space.

Sectional Sofas

The popularity of sectional sofas has increased along with the size of the average television. This is no coincidence. When TVs get bigger, homeowners do more entertaining. The sectional sofa is the perfect solution. As the name implies, these sofas come in sections or pieces, which means that they can be arranged to fit nearly any space. They are also quite large. The average sectional sofa is 10 feet long and can comfortably seat five people.

Media Stand or Cabinet

Before the advent of flat screen sets, homeowners had to make room for a piece of furniture known as an entertainment center. These units were essentially armoires designed to hold big, heavy television sets. As you might imagine, they took up an awful lot of space. In fact, they often dominated the room. But since flat screen sets are much thinner and lighter, they do not require big, hulking pieces of furniture to support them.

As we mentioned earlier, most units can be mounted on the wall. But many homeowners prefer the standing units that can be placed atop a smaller piece of furniture, like a media stand or cabinet. These small units can be used to store audio and video accessories, like DVD or Blu-Ray players and their discs. They are affordable and they don’t take up much space.

Coffee Table

Decorators often say that the largest piece of furniture should be placed first. That means homeowners should start with the couch, chairs, and the media stand and finish with the coffee table.  In spite of the fact that it is often the smallest piece of furniture in the room, the coffee table is typically the focal point of the room. Because of its position between the television and the sofa, it is often the piece guests notice first.

What should you look for? The coffee table sets that decorative tone of the room. If you are interested in a more traditional or conservative look, you may want a table made from a dark wood, like mahogany.  Dark woods are a popular choice for homeowners who have a mantle.  Matching the two is an easy way to create consistency.

However, if you do not have a mantle and you want a more modern look, a wrought iron table with a glass top can help you achieve it.   It is important to note that they tables can be a safety hazard for small children. If you do have kids, it may be best to go with a table that has a plastic or acrylic top.

Take these suggestions and tips into account when adding the next piece to your living room.
