The Physical Features of a Cheetah
The name ‘Cheetah’ was derived from a hindi word meaning “spotted”. It has black round or oval spots on yellow or tan fur. The spots are found in almost the whole body apart from the throat that is white and the abdomen. The tail ends with about 4 to 6 black rings and a white tuft. Humans can tell the different cheetahs apart by the pattern of the rings on the tail and the spot patterns all over the body. It has a small head with eyes set high. This feature helps it a lot as it relies mostly on sight than any other sense when hunting. It also hunts during the early hours of the day and late afternoons unlike other cats that are nocturnal. From the inner aspect of it eyes down to the mouth runs a beautiful black tear mark. It has small teeth that make room for large nasal passages. A lot of air is needed when splinting and thus the large air passages. It weighs about 36 to 64 kgs when fully matured. The feather weight is ideal when splinting. Every feature in its body, you will notice was adapted for speed. Large nostrils and lungs help it in breathing in large amounts of air at a time. The heart is also large and the adrenals are built to run. The tail which can be over 80 centimeters long helps it achieve balance as it turns quickly with the movement of its prey. It has very light bones and small collar bones and vertical shoulder blades help lengthen its stride. Though it can reach very high speeds of up to 71 kilometers per hour in a few seconds, this can only be maintained for not more than a minute as it is very taxing to its physiology. At this time, it has to have a mandatory rest for the body to cool down.
