Shih Tzu – Good With Older Kids, Not So Much With Younger Ones
One of the most sought after small dog breeds in the market is the Shih Tzu, a very cute but demanding breed to take care of. This breed has a distinctively regal bearing, which is why it’s been dubbed as the Imperial Shih Tzu. It is a good companion pet, with a personality that’s friendly to all.
The tests to restore the original function of different dog breeds
There have been conducted tests for dogs, to check if what they were bred for are the expectations they can live up to. And so there were developed tests for hunting dogs, herding dogs, ground tests for terriers, lure events for sight hounds, water and draft tests, and even stamina tests. Dogs that pass the tests assigned to the breed they belong to were judged adequate to expectations associated with their breed.
But the toy dog breed requires no such tests of “performance” or even the demanding training to prepare them for dog shows and competitions. Each toy dog breed can be good at the job it was bred to do – become good companions, excellent pets, and provide a wonderful company for pet owners.

A Shih Tzu is usually friendly to most people, but it also has a princess-like personality – it demands to be spoiled. It has a great sense of self, which is probably why many owners notice this breed is not good with other pets and little kids around. But if the other kids love to comb the Shih Tzu’s long, fine coat of hair, that dog will love that kid.
Because it’s often alert and vigilant, Shih Tzu are actually great watchdogs. Be careful though, as poorly bred and trained one can be noisy and snappy. But this breed is smart and can be trained to be obedient, but it can be too smart. You need to be persistent when training it, as it can be stubborn. Be careful with punishing it, since it can shut down and do the opposite of what you want to train it to not do.
Taking care of your Shih Tzu – health problems with this toy dog breed
Renal dysplasia (a kidney disease), slipped stifles or kneecaps, and large eyes that are prone to injury – that’s a quick glance at the Shih Tzu’s health problems. It also has a slight wheezing problem with its short muzzle. Other than these, everything else is connected with his coat maintenance – poor grooming results in tangles, hot spots, painful mats, skin infections, and to some extent maggot infestation. Every day grooming is advised, or at least every other day. If you can’t do that you need to choose another breed.
