Magnet Steel

I have a magnet and a piece of steel both have same color,weight, and size. How do I know which is which?

Place each near another piece of steel and see which is attracted. Or place the samples near a compass and see which strongly deflects the needle. Or using only the samples, place a corner of one piece at the middle of the other. Then reverse the samples. Only the magnet will attract the middle of the other piece. The middle of the real magnet is neutral. If the samples are squares, try the ‘middles’ on adjacent sides.
