The Tradition of Charm Bracelets

The elaborate and intricate pieces of jewellery that we know today as charm bracelets have evolved somewhat from their original ancestors.  The first signs of the charm bracelet date back to the Neolthic era when people would pick up unusual looking pieces of stone and wood in the belief that they would warn off evil spirits.

In ancient Egyptian time’s charm bracelets were also used as identity tags, they became personalised jewellery items that contained family names and were thought to ensure that family members could find each other in the afterlife. The use of charm bracelets as identification tags continued to be an underlying use for the pieces of personalised jewellery.

Along the line charm bracelets have become more elaborate and decadent, the ability to warn of evil spirits with charms was still very much a belief until recent years when charm bracelets became more of a fashion accessory.

The appeal of charm bracelets however stretches far wider than simply accessorising your outfit. Many families use charm bracelets as a way of protecting their children. Rather than believing that the charm bracelets contain special powers, modern mums are using personalised jewellery to ensure their children never get lost. In a similar way to the Egyptians the charms themselves have become identity tags; the engraved jewellery often carries the inscription of the child’s name, mother’s telephone number and address. For young children who cannot remember this key information it can be particularly useful.

Taking the idea one step further some mums give their child their first charm bracelet as a young child and for every birthday they add a charm with a different engraved message. Not only is the charm bracelet then a method of protecting your children but also something that will have meaning as they grow older and something that they will cherish.
