my kitten is real skittish?
My kitten is 8 months old, she is real skittish. She sometimes even runs from me when I start to pet her or pick her up. I can shake her treat jar and she comes running. How can help get her out of this skittish thing?
A lot of patience!
How long have you had her and do you know anything about her life before she came to you? What happens to them when they are very young will affect how they react and trust.
What I would do is talk softly to her and let her come to you. When you are watching TV or working at the computer, call her and see if she will sit with you..use a treat if you have to. Reach your hand out and let her get the treat and hold it steady and see if she rubs her head on you. But don’t try to pick her up.
Talk to her softly when you move about your home. If you see her lying somewhere, talk to her, call her name and if she doesn’t run, approach slowly and just reach your hand out, if she still doesn’t run, stroke her gently. Still don’t try to pick her up.
Some cats never like to be picked up and held, but will come to you on their own for snuggling.
I have one that is this way. I got her almost 8 years and she still startles easily. She was adopted by a friend’s daughter as an adult from a vet adoption center. When the friend went to college, my friend couldn’t care for her properly because of allergies. She has been with me and a pampered kitty ever since. She is an absolute sweetheart and loves to snuggle, sleeps next to me, lets me reach to pet her with one hand like I described above, but just try to pick her up and she goes wild with teeth and claws! The only thing I can figure is someone picked her up and mistreated her in her very early years.
Since your kitty is still very young, I hope a little time and patience will get her out of her skittishness.
